Patio Deck Size: 1020 Square Feet

Max Group Size: 20.4 Persons

This family was very thorough in thinking through all their options for the backyard. Was a pool the best choice? Would it fit? After ruling out the pool for phase 1 we decided on a hot tub and complete deck remodel. It was important to the client that the deck area be rain proof and have cooling/ heating capabilities. We achieved this by use of ceiling fans and ceiling heaters. The deck was expanded out 10′ and completely reconstructed underneath where the TV and sitting area would be located. The same brick that was used on their home was incorporated into the knee wall around the lower deck. The space was finished on all sides from ceiling to flooring and turned out beautiful! Gas and electric were run to the new and future proposed areas for grill, hot tub, heaters, fans, outlets, and tv. The client wanted the space to feel ‘cozy’ so in the design process we kept the fire pit, hot tub, dry bar, and sunroom access very close which also allows space for a future in ground pool. A pavilion was constructed over the hot tub with privacy screens to provide the most privatized setting. Inside the pavilion a tv, led lighting, and tv were installed for the ultimate outdoor experience. It was also important that the kids have a firepit to hang out with their friends. A new extended patio was installed to connect all the features and provide overflow seating for larger family events. Guests can access the backyard by coming down their newly remodeled stairs steps. The outdoor space was surrounded with perennial trees and flowers that will mature into 100% privacy and offer pops of colors for many years to come.

Project Challenges

There was the question early on of how they would use the space and what they really wanted for phase 1 that would not restrict phase 2 buildouts. The boundary restrictions were the backyard easements and the 8′ slope towards the walking path. The farther away from the house we went the more expensive the project became because of the increased retaining wall heights. In the end we decided to pull everything closer to the house and leave the option for a future pool and grand staircase leading towards the pool. This also allows site access for the future build out.
